As Eskom’s on-going power cuts keep South Africa in the dark, security issues have become a concern, with thieves apparently monitoring load shedding timetables to target certain areas.
The scheduled power cuts usually last for two hours at a time, leaving home owners who don’t have alarm system back-ups vulnerable.
Insurers have called on home-owners to assess their alarm systems and insurance cover. Managing Director of MUA Insurance Acceptances Christelle Fourie says this is an unfortunate reality that must be faced.
“In South Africa, we are utterly dependant on providing or creating our own security environments within our homes because we live in a city with a very high crime rate. If the power supply goes off and the batteries go off as well, it is so easy for a criminal to walk in and take what they want.”
Meanwhile ANC secretary-general Gwede Mantashe says the ruling party’s National Executive Committee has told government to make urgent interventions to help Eskom to build its new power stations more speedily.
He was briefing the media in Pretoria following the ANC National Executive Committee’s three-day meeting.
Mantashe says neighbouring countries such as Mozambique will be approached to help keep the country’s lights on.
He also says alternative energy sources will be considered.
