When it comes to picking car insurance, many people go with what their friends use, or the company whose commercial is seen the most on TV lately. But that’s probably not the best idea. Like any business, insurance companies all have different rates, and can vary greatly in everything from their coverage to their office hours to the speed of their claims service.
So, shopping around is essential to getting a good deal, and the proper coverage and service for you.
If you are looking for new car insurance or switching companies, keep the following list of 10 questions close by while researching. It will help you choose the policy that’s right for you.
Alternatively, contact us – we’ll take the hassle out of searching and comparing, and advise you on your options.
1. What kinds of coverage do I need?
2. What is my risk assessment?
The more of a risk you pose, the higher your rate will be. Companies use data such as your age, sex, driving record, criminal record, credit rating and where you live to determine your risk.
3. Who will my policy cover to drive my car?
4. What will my excess amount be?
5. Do you offer any discounts?
Discounts or credits are often given for having certain safety features in your car, such as a car alarm, tracker system or air bags or for having a clean driving record. It’s worth asking.
6. What are my payment options?
Monthly is the general method, although some insurers offer better deals should you be able to pay it annually.
7. How will you value my car?
Whether you’re buying a sports car or family sedan, before you purchase any vehicle, find out the value, and then do at least a cursory insurance check.
8. Do you have a 24hour claims service?
Getting into an accident is stressful, even if no one is injured. Don’t put yourself in a position to be even more stressed out because your accident occurs on a Saturday night, but your insurer doesn’t open for business until Monday morning. Plenty of insurance companies now offer 24/7 claim reporting, so make sure you select one that does.
9. If my car is in an accident, would you pay for original manufactured parts?
Aftermarket parts are less expensive, which is why some insurers prefer to use it.
10. Do you have an office where we can meet in person?
